Kalloni Circular Walk on Lesbos Greece.
This circular walk on Lesbos Island starts at Kalloni subsequently visiting the Monasteries of Mirsiniotis, Limonas and Moni Metochi.
The walk is mainly on paths, kalderimi (cobbled paths) and moni-paths with just a little bit on tracks and is around 11 KMs in distance. It is usually quite easy to find somewhere to park a car on the Petra side of Kalloni in one
of the side streets.
Walk along the road towards Petra for around 2kms - ignoring a track about halfway up the road marked to Monastery Mirsiniotis. Just as the main road bends very sharply right there is a shrine on the left and a crash barrier in front of you, go ahead between
the crash barrier onto a narrow path (you will then see the entrance to a military base on your right). Almost immediately turn left up a marked (blue dot) rocky path and follow this into pine woods - after a few minutes of climbing the countryside opens out and the monastery appears ahead. Simply follow the path down to reach the rear of the monastery and continue on to reach the front gate and parking area.
Go down through the parking area to a track junction, turn right and follow the track, passing a small chapel up on the right, to soon reach a small goat farm. Do not pass the goat buildings but turn left on a faint path which winds down to and crosses a stream bed - continue on
the path opposite which goes slightly up through woods to reach a path junction. Turn right and now follow this moni-path on up through woods and rocky areas.
The area becomes more open but still very rocky - there are good views of the countryside and also you can see a large church-like building down on the right. A road comes into view ahead but sadly the moni-path
has been destroyed near the road and you have to make your way up open ground to reach the road by climbing across the crash barriers. Turn right and walk along to a church, cross the road and walk down to the large monastery of Limonas. The area seems quite commercialised with lots of
coaches, cars and a cafe - also there are plenty of mini-byzantine type chapels all over the place. You can go into the monastery grounds and visit the cloisters and museum if you wish.
The path winds down to reach the gates of the second monastery - Moni Metochi - there are some seats
just inside the entrance and you can also walk on into the courtyard. From the monastery entrance go through some green gates opposite - this
is now a narrow rocky path - pass a church up on the left after several minutes - stay on the sometimes really narrow path to eventually pass a
farm and arrive at a track. Turn left on this track soon passing a pumping station on the left, ignore a track coming in from the right but
at the next junction turn right. Cross a concrete bridge and then at a t-junction turn left to walk back into Kalloni.
